Therewasonceamanwhohadthreesons,twoofcleveryoungmenandthethird,afool.Thefathermademuchofhistwoeldersonsbutgavenotapinforhisyoungestone.Theelderbrothers,too,mockedatthefoolandcalledhimSmudgefaceiftheycalledhimanything.
Sounbearablewaslifeforhimathomethatpoor-Smudgefacemadeuphismindtoseekhisfortuneelsewhere.Hethoughtandhethoughtwheretogoandatlastdecided,inthehopeoffindingsomeworkthere,tomakeforthetownwherelivedthekinghimself.
Ontheway,Smudgefaceheardthatinthekingsforesttherelivedtwofiercebeasts,anaurochsandaboar,whoattackedallandsundryandthatthistroubledthekingsomuchthathehadhadthebravestofhismengointotheforesttimeandagaintotryandkillthem.Butsincenonehadbeenabletodoso,thekinghadpromisedthathewouldgivehisdaughterinmarriagetowhoeverdidawaywiththefearfulbeasts.Thebravestofthebraveandthestrongestofthestronghadsetoutatoncetotrytheirluckbuthadonlygottenoutoftheforestalivebytheskinoftheirteeth,andthekingdidnotknowwhattodo.
“WhyshouldntIgoafterthosebeasts!”saidSmudgefacetohimself.“Imightgetthebetterofthem.”
Andhecametothepalaceanddeclaredthathewoulddoawaywiththeaurochsandtheboar.
“Justlookathim!”thekingsservantssaid.“Why,wehadthelikeliestandbravestofyoungmenhereandnoneofthemcoulddoanything,sowhatcanthisfooldo!Hellonlymakealaughing-stockofhimself,andservehimright,too!”
TheywouldhavelikedtodriveSmudgefaceoutofthepalacethenandtherebutdarednot,forthekinghadsaidthatanyonewhowishedtocouldtryhisluckandnoneweretobekeptfromdoingso.
Smudgefacenowannouncedthathewouldfighttheaurochsfirst,andthewholetown,includingthekinghimself,camerunningtowatchthecombat.
Choosingaplacenearthechurchwheregrewage-oldoak-trees,Smudgefaceleanedagainstoneofthemandwaited.
Afteratimeoutsprangtheaurochsfromtheforestandcameathimwitharoar,butSmudgefacepretendednottoseehim,anditwasonlywhenhewasverycloseandabouttopinhimtotheoakthatheleaptaside.Theaurochslungedathimbutmissed,hissharphornspiercingthetrunkofthetreeandstickinginitsothattossandshakehisheadashewouldhecouldnotpullthemoutagain.Smudgefacenowrushedattheaurochsandwithonewaveofhisswordcutoffhishead.
Seeingthebeastdead,thetownsfolkwavedandcheeredandthekinghimselfclappedhishandsforjoy.
Buteventhiswasnotenoughforthekingsservants.

ThetownsfolkwerefilledwithwondertoseehowcleverSmudgefacewas,andeventhekinghimselfwasfullofpraiseforhim.
“Nowtheresacleverlad!”saidhe.“Hesmanagedtotraptheboar.Letsseeifhecandoawaywithhim.”
ButSmudgefaceonlylaughedtohearsuchtalk.Hecalledtotheboarfrombehindthedoorandteasedhim,andtheboarroaredandflungaboutthechurchinarage,tryingtofindawayout.
Allofasuddentherehewasstandingonthebelfryandlookingdownonthepeoplebelow.ForSmudgefacehadleftthedoortothebelfryajaronpurpose,toluretheboarthere.Hebeganteasinghimnowharderthanever,theboarcouldbearitnolongerbutmadealungeathim,and,missinghisfooting,fellfromthebelfry.Smudgefaceleaptasidejustintime,andtheboarhitthesoftearthbelow.Heplungedintoittohisbellyandcouldnotsomuchasstir,andSmudgefacebroughtouthisswordandcutoffhishead.
Thepeoplerejoicedtoseethefearfulbeastdead,andthekingclappedhishandsindelight.
SaidSmudgeface,cominguptohim:
“Yell,willyouletmehaveyourdaughterinmarriage?”
“IsupposeImust,forapromiseisapromise,”repliedtheking.
SoSmudgefaceandthekingsdaughterweremarried,andarightfineweddingwastheirs.Soharddideveryonedancethatthefloorboardsbent,theearthrockedandshookandthestarsblinkedinthesky.Ahundredbullsandathousandhogswereroastedfortheguests,andthetablesweresetoutinthepalaceSmudgefacesettleddowninthepalaceandwashappyascouldbe.Hisyoungwifewassocomelyandsweetthatabetteronecouldnotbefoundandtheservantsattendedtohiseveryneedjustasithewerethekinghimself.
Butthekingdidnotlikehissons-in-lawtotwiddletheirthumbsandfritterawaytheirtime,sohesaidtoSmudgeface:

Theothersons-in-lawrosewiththefirstgleamofdawnandwentofftotheforesttohuntforthebirdbutSmudgefacesleptonasthoughhehadnotacareintheworld.Itwasmiddaywhenhiswifewokehim,saying:
“Come,now,areyouevergoingtogetup?Thehusbandsofmysistershavebeenintheforestforalongtimenow,theymayevenhavecaughtthebirdwhileyouliehereandsleep.”
“Whatistobewillbe,”saidSmudgefaceinreply,yawning.
Buthegotupallthesame,ate,and,takingsomefoodalongwithhim,wenttotheforest.Hewalkedaboutinitforalongtimebutnobirddidhesee.Afteratimehemetagrey-hairedoldmantherewhosaidtohim:
“Givemesomethingtoeat,mylad.Ihaventhadacrumbinmymouthforthreedays.”
Now,Smudgefacewasneveronetobestingy,sohegavehisbagoffoodtotheoldmanandsaid:
“Here,Grandpa,eatyourfill.AnddontbecrossthatIhavenothingbettertoofferyou.”
Theoldmantookthebagandbeganpolishingoffthefoodwithgreatgusto.
Saidhebetweenbites:
“Wereyousettingoutforadistantspot,then,thatyoutooksomefoodwithyou?
SaidSmudgefaceinreply:
“Iamheretotryandcatchthewhitebird,forsothekingorderedhissons-in-lawtodo.Butsincetheotherssetoutbeforedawnandhavesurelycaughtitbynow,Iamsimplywastingmytime.”
Saidtheoldman:
“Donotgrieve,fornoonecancatchthisbirdwithoutmyhelp.Gatherthebreadcrumbsfromthegroundandscattertheminthegladeyonder.Manydifferentbirdswillcomeflyingtopeckthem,theonethekingwantsamongthem.Youwonthavemuchtroublecatchingit,soneveryoufear.Allyouhavetodoispounceonitandseizeit.Andifeveryouneedmyhelpagain,comehereandcallthreetimesIamhere,Grandpa!andIllhearyouandcome.”
Smudgefacethankedtheoldmanforhiscounselanddidjustashehadtoldhim.Hecaughtthewhitebird,and,comingoutontotheroadalongwhichthekingsothersons-in-lawweretoreturnhome,satdowntowait.
Hewaitedalongtime,evenfinishingwhatwasleftofthefood,andstilltheydidnotcome.
Itwaseveningwhenatlasttheyappeared,comingoutoftheforestwithhangingheads.
SeeingSmudgefacesittingthere,theywereveryangryandbegantochideandtoscoldhim.
“Justlookatthatloafer!”criedthey.“Dozingbythewaysidewhilewedoallthework.Wereallinasweatwhatwithrunningaboutsomuch!
SaidSmudgefaceinreply:
“Iamnotsuchafoolastorushabouttheforestinvain.WhyshouldntIsitandsleepforabitnowthatIvecaughtthebird!”
“Stoptalkingnonsense,”thesons-in-lawburstout.
“Ifyoudontbelieveme,lookforyourselves!”
AndwiththesewordsSmudgefaceuntiedhisbagandshowedthemthebird.
“Whowouldhavethoughtit!”saidthey,amazed,andtheoldestofthemasked:
“Whatareyougoingtodowiththebirdnowthatyouhaveit?Perhapsyoullsellittous?Wellpayyouwellforit.”
“Iwillifyoudo.”
“Howmuchdoyouwantforit?
“Apieceofyourlittlefingernobiggerthananoatgrain.”
Theoldestofthesons-in-lawthoughtthisover.
“Ofcourse,choppingoffapieceofmyfingerwillhurt,”saidhetohimself,“butstill,IthinkIllletthefoolhaveit.ForthenIllatleastgetthebirdandthekingwillgivemeagoodsumofmoneyforit.”
HechoppedoffapieceofhislittlefingerandhandedittoSmudgeface,andSmudgefaceslippeditinhispocketandgavehimthebird.Andtheoldestofthesons-in-lawtookthebirdtothekingandgotalargesumofmoneyfromhiminreward.
Onthefollowingdaythekingsummonedhissons-in-lawagain.
“Iampleasedthatyouvemanagedtocatchthewhitebird,”saidhe.“ButonlyhimwillIthinktrulybraveandrewardroyallywhocatchesandbringsmethemagichorse.Manyhavetriedtodoitbutnonesucceeded.Gototheforestnowandcatchit!”
Onthenextday,thesons-in-lawrosewiththefirstgleamofdawnandsetoutfortheforest,andonlySmudgefacesnoredonasifwhetherthehorsewerecaughtornotmatteredtohimnotatall.
Itwashiswifewhowokehim,saying:
“Getupandgototheforest!Gonow,andperhapsyoullcatchthehorse.Theotherscaughtthebirdyesterdaywhileyoureturnedempty-handed.”
OffwentSmudgefacetotheforest,nordidheforgettotakealongabagoffood.
Hecametotheplacewherehehadmettheoldmanandcalledoutthreetimes:
“Iamhere,Grandpa!”
Andnosoonerwerethewordsoutofhismouththantherestoodtheoldmanbeforehim.
“Areyouheretotryandcatchsomethingagain?”askedhe.
SaidSmudgefaceinreply:
“Thekinghasorderedthemagichorsetobecaught.Dopleasehelpme!”
“Thatseasy!Hereisabridleforyou.Gototheedgeoftheforest,andwhensomehorsescometograzethere,putitontheonethatcomeslast.Itwillbetheonethekingwants.”
Smudgefacedidastheoldmantoldhim.Nosoonerhadheputthebridleonthehorsethan-owonderofwonders!-thehorseturnedintoabeautifulstallionwithagildedsaddle.Allonehadtodowasjumponhisbackandrideoffatagallop!
AndthatwasjustwhatSmudgefacedid.Hegallopedtotheplacewherehehadmettheothersons-in-lawthenightbefore,and,tyingthehorsetoatree,tookoutsomefoodandbegantoeat.
Thesons-in-law.cameoutoftheforestandsaid:
“Now,whatsortofmanareyou!Allyoudoiseatandneverwanttodoastrokeofwork.Lookatus!WevebeenwanderingintheforestthewholedaylongandarecomingbackwithnothingtoshowforIt.”
SaidSmudgefaceinreply:
“Waitaminute,Illcomewithyou,Illonlyrunintotheforestforamoment.”
Heranintotheforest,untiedthestallion,and,jumpingintothesaddle,camegallopingbackagain.
Thesons-in-lawwerethunderstruck.
“Wheredidyoucatchhim?”askedthey.
SaidSmudgefaceinreply:
“Hewholookshardenoughissuretofindwhatheislookingfor.”
“Well,welookedandneverfoundhim.”
“Youdidntlookhardenough.”
Nowthesons-in-lawbegantobargainwithhim.
“Sellusyourhorse!”saidthey.
“Idontmindifyoupaymewellforhim.”
“Howmuchdoyouwant?”
“Oh,notsoverymuch.Nothingbutasignet-ring.”
Themiddleson-in-lawbeganofferinghimalargesumofmoney,butSmudgefacewouldhavenoneofitandinsistedonthering.
Themiddleson-in-lawgavehimthering,and,gettingthehorseinreturn,tookhimtothekingwhorewardedhimroyally.
Onthefollowingdaythekingsaidtothesons-in-law:
“Thereisahugebearlivingintheforestwhodoesmuchharm.Hewhokillshimwillgetasackofgold.ProvetomethatyouareindeedthebraveladsIthinkyouandkillthebearforme!”
Earlythenextmorningtheysetoutfortheforestagain,andonlySmudgefacewasinnohurryandsleptandsnoredtillitwasalmostnoon.Itwashiswifewhofinallyrousedhimandsenthiminsearchofthebear.
Smudgefacecameintotheforestandcalledoutthreetimes:
“Iamhere,Grandpa!Iamhere,Iamhere!
Thesamemomenttheoldmanappeared.
“Well,now,haveyoucometokillthebear?”askedhe.
“SoIhave,”saidSmudgefaceinreply.“ButhowwillIdoit?
“Illtellyouhow.Itsstillearly,thebeariswanderingaboutintheforestandishardtofind.Waituntilnoonwhenhewillwanderintoathicketforarestandthenkillhim.Now,inordertodothiscreepupclosertohim,strikehimonthemuzzlewithastakeandthenmoveasidequickly,andifherushesoutatyou,looksharpandhidefromhiminthebrush.Youwonthavetostrikethebearasecondtime,foryourfirstblowwillhavebeenenoughtofinishhim.Whenyouseethathehasbreathedhislast,skinhimandtaketheskintotheking.”
Smudgefacedidastheoldmantoldhimto.Hefoundthebear,killedandskinnedhimandthencameoutontotheroadtowaitfortheothersons-in-law.Hesatdownbythewaysideandtookoutsomefood,andhewasstilleatingwhentheyappeared.Comingcloser,theystoodroundhimandlaughed.
“Isitthatyouhavekilledthebearthatyouveworkedupsuchanappetite?”askedthey.
“OfcourseIvekilledhim!”saidSmudgeface.Andhebroughtoutthebearskintoproveit,fortheywouldnotbelievehimotherwise.
Thesons-in-lawbegantobargainwithhim.
“Sellusthebearskin,”saidthey.
“Idontmind.”
“Howmuchareyouasking?
“AllIwantisfortheyoungestofyoutoletmepiercehisear.”
Atthistheyoungestofthesons-in-lawsaid,displeased:
“Stopthesesillyjestsofyours!WhatgoodwillitdoyouifIhaveaholeinmyear?Bettertakesomemoney.”
ButSmudgefacewouldhavenoneofit.
“Itsuptoyou!”saidhe.“Thebearskinismine,andtheearisyours.”
Therewasnothingtobedone,andastheyoungestofthesons-in-lawwasveryeagertohavethebearskin,helethisearbepierced.Inreturn,hegottheskinandtookittothekingwhogavehimasackofgoldinreward.
Soonafterthatthekingheldagreatfeasttowhichheinvitedthekingsofalltheneighbouringlandsandallhissons-in-lawwiththeexceptionofSmudgeface.
“WhyshouldIinvitehimsaidhe.”Hehasdonenothingtodeserveit.“
Theothersons-in-lawwenttothefeastbutSmudgefacemadeofffortheforest.Therehemettheoldmanwhoaskedhim:
“Whathashappened,myson?Whydoyoufrown?Areyouangryatanyone?”
SaidSmudgefaceinreply:
“Iamangryatmyownself.WhydidIcatchthebird,thehorseandthebearonlytogivethemuptotheothersons-in-law!Itwasveryfoolishofme.NowthekingthinksthattheyareheroesandIamagood-for-nothing.Why,hedidnoteveninvitemetothefeast!”
Saidtheoldmaninsoothingtones:
“Dontyougrieve,youllbeatthefeast,too.Hereisapeaforyou.Eatit,andyoullturnintowhosoeveryouchooseandwillbeabletogowhereveryouplease.”
SmudgefacethankedtheOldmanforhiskindnessandwenthome.Heswallowedthepea,and,turningintoaflea,slippedintothefeasthallwhereallthekingsguestsweregathered.Therehesawthethreesons-in-lawandheardthemboasting,theyoungest,sayingthathehadkilledthebear,themiddleone,thathehadcaughtthemagichorse,andtheoldestone,thathehadsnaredthewhitebird.
Smudgefacereturnedtohisroom,changedbackintohispropershapeagain,anddressinghimselfupinfestivegarb,rejoinedtheguests.
Thesons-in-lawweremuchsurprisedtoseehim.AndSmudgefacespokeuprightinfrontofeveryoneandsaid:
“YouhaveturnedouttobesuchbraggartsthatIcannotkeepbackthetruthanylonger.LeteveryoneknowthatitwasIandnotyouwhocaughtthebirdandthehorseandkilledthebear.”
Atthisthesons-in-lawraisedagreathullabaloo,shouting,allthreeofthemtogether:
“Lies!Lies!Lies!
AndtheycalledintheservantsandbadethemthrowSmudgefaceinadungeon.
ButSmudgefacebroughtoutfromhispocketthepieceoffingerandthesignet-ringandsaid:
“ThisiswhatIgotfromtheseknavesinreturnforthebirdandthehorse,andasforthebearskin,theyoungerson-in-lawletmepiercehiseartopaymeforit.”
Thesons-in-law,seeingthattheywereshownupforwhattheywere,leftthefeastindisgrace,andtheguestssurroundedSmudgefaceandbeganpraisinghim.Andasfortheking,hewasnowfullofsuchrespectforhimthatheproclaimedhimhisheir.
AtthekingsdeathSmudgefacebecamekinginhissteadandmustbereigningoverthekingdomstillifheisalive.
